Now that the mushrooms are coming up, one other thing to look for at this time of year are wild mushroom shows. There are many shows in British Columbia, in Washington, and more than I know in Oregon. I’ll try to list them here in order from North to South.
Starting way up in Whistler British Columbia there is the the Fungus Among Us Festival organized by the Whistler Naturalists. It starts Saturday October 12 at 6:00 pm and ends October 13 @ 4:00 pm. As I write this, the event is already sold out; keep it mind for another year, if you’d like a mushroom weekend in Whistler.
A week later the Vancouver Mycological Society presents their 39th Annual VMS Mushroom Show, Sunday October 21 from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm, VanDusen, Floral Hall 5151 Oak St Vancouver, BC
If you are out on Vancouver Island or need an excuse to go there, there are two mushroom shows.
The same weekend as the Whistler festival, up the island near Nanaimo, the North Island Wildlife Recovery Centre and the Arrowsmith Naturalists presents the 4th Annual Mushroom Festival on Sunday, October 14 from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM on NIWRA grounds at 1240 Leffler Road in Errington.
The South Vancouver Island Mycological Society has their Annual Mushroom Show, October 28, 2018, 10 AM to 4 PM, at Cordova Bay 55 Plus Center, 5238 Cordova Bay Rd, Victoria, British Columbia.
In Washington, I know of four shows. The Bellingham show is a week before for everyone else, while the last weekend in October there are three shows.
The Northwest Mushroomers Association in Bellingham Washington has their show Sunday, October 21, 12 noon – 5 pm in the Bloedel Donovan Park, Community Building.
The Snohomish County Mycological Society in Everett have their show Annual Wild Mushroom Show, Sunday, October 28, 10am-5pm, Floral Hall in Forest Park, Everett, Washington.
Over on the west side of Puget Sound, the Kitsap Peninsula Mycological Society has their Wild Mushroom Show, Sunday October 28th, 1-5 PM, in President’s Hall at Kitsap County Fairgrounds, 1250 NW Fairgrounds Rd, Bremerton, Washington
Of course, I can’t leave out Seattle and the Puget Sound Mycological Society with their big show. Our show has a new location. The 55th Annual Wild Mushroom Show is, Saturday October 27th, Noon – 6PM and Saturday October 28th: 10AM – 5PM, North Seattle Community College (in the old cafeteria) 9600 College Dr. Seattle, WA.
If you can’t make any of the Washington mushroom shows, consider the Oregon mushroom shows and festivals.
One the same day, Saturday October 28th, down in Pisgah OR which is a few miles out of Eugene, the Pisgah Arboretum is hosting their Mushroom Festival 2018 from 10 AM – 5 PM. This is one of the few festivals with live music!
If you missed all the other festivals there is yet another one occurring the first weekend in November. Down on the Oregon Coast in Brookings Oregon there is the 2nd Annual Wild Rivers Mushroom Festival organized by the Wild Rivers Mushroom Club. Their show is Nov 3-4, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm (both days) at Chetco Activity Center, 550 Chetco Avenue, Brookings, Oregon.
Here is my suggestion. Start in mid-october at Nanaimo, on Vancouver Island, the next weekend hit the Bellingham or Vancouver BC shows, then hit at least one show around the Puget Sound the last weekend in October, or alternatively continue down to Oregon for other shows and on to Oregon Coast in early November. That wouldn’t be too many shows would it? Of course, along the way stop for mushroom foraging and bring your interesting finds to any of the shows for identification.
May you fill your basket with mushrooms and your soul with adventures.
I have not listed any of the weekend camps just the public day events, but if I missed any big shows, let me know.
